NOAH
We’ve decided to get Noah’s speech assessed and potentially take advantage of the free speech therapy that’s available through EC Cares. As adorable as his mispronunciations are, he’s getting old enough that it needs to be addressed. Mostly the s-blends in the beginning of words, like “spider” or “spoon” which become “poon” and “pider” and some of the consonants inside words get dropped. He also does a funny substitution of the letter “g” for “d” in some words, so “design” becomes “gesign.” Some words are just unexplainable like “pliano” for piano. Apparently if we address the issues with speech therapy now, it’s really easy to solve and won’t take long. Aside from the pronunciation concerns, there are the funny kid phrases, which just show the complexity of the English language, like “Why you didn’t putted…?” Some of the phrases, we’ve been working to correct, like changing “what you said?” to “what did you say?”

Noah enjoyed Hanukkah and got closer to being able to spin a dreidel. He really liked the latkes this year, which was new, given his unusual lack of appreciation for potatoes. His greatest wishes for Hanukkah presents were a music box and snow globe. He got the former and the later will probably come for a birthday present. We don’t know for sure how he picked up an interest in those items. We think the snow globe came because there’s one in Mary Poppins. I have to say though that I wonder how many 3-almost 4-year-old boys (or kids in general) in America were asking for a snow globe and music box for the holidays. It was a refreshing innocence in the face of the consumer culture with all the tv and movie related toys. He’s not totally immune though. We were in TJMaxx and he saw some Spiderman toy and started whining like crazy that he wanted it. Mind you, he’s never seen Spiderman anything, but enough other kids have Spiderman related products that he knows it’s something cool!

His recent favorite song is “Miracles of Miracles” from Fiddler on the Roof. It has presented plenty of opportunity for discussion including what are miracles, what does “slew” mean (as in David slew Goliath), and giants. He’s big into both miracles and giants right now. The interest in giants has been piqued by several stories he’s read lately that have featured giants. And then to learn that Goliath was a giant, just added to his appreciation of the song. One day we were listening to the song and discussing miracles on the way to swim lessons. When we got there he didn’t hold my hand in the parking lot. Although I generally insist he do so, I didn’t make a big deal out of it because he was right by my side and being safe. When he got across and on to the sidewalk he said to me, “Mama, you know why I wasn’t holding your hand? I didn’t need your help because God will help me!” I didn’t know whether to be proud, amused, or appalled. I countered by saying, “Noah, do you know how God helps little boys? It’s by giving them mamas to look after them. Next time, you’ll hold my hand!”

His drawing skills have really taken off lately. His pictures look like people, with the right features. He shocked me one day last month with the clown picture I uploaded here. He drew the face and then the body (complete with belly button), then put on arms and legs, hands and feet. He started drawing fingers, counted to 5, paused and then kept going, while explaining that he had extra fingers because he was a clown and funny. Same with the toes. “They’re long, because he’s funny.” He loves to cut things out too, so he and Cary have taken to making finger puppets. The other picture here is of the puppets he made one morning last week. He brought them in to me and explained that there was a robot, a giant (the one with the long neck obviously), and a ghost daddy and a ghost mommy and the ghost mommy has a baby. I loved the pregnant “ghostie.”

In less pleasant news, his newest set of annoying tricks is saliva based. He is constantly filling his mouth up with spit and swishing it around and or occasionally spitting. It’s driving us nuts. Of course we don’t tolerate it, and have tried several approaches to getting him to stop, but nothing seems to work. So, life, while good overall, isn’t with out its challenges.

AVI
I feel like we’ve already lost our newborn to an active baby. Avi is close to 17 pounds. He is grabbing and holding things, transferring things between hands and mouth, giggling, blowing raspberries, screeching, teasing, and flirting with everyone. Nursing has new challenges. Though he often still rubs my chest back and forth with his free hand, he now has taken to hitting me enthusiastically as well. Pounding actually. And I unintentionally made him cry recently when he bit me so hard with his toothless gums that I yelped loudly, pulled him off and said, “No, Avi!” We were both shocked and surprised. I wish I could say that was the last time, but no, and that boy has a strong jaw! He also gets easily distracted whenever Noah is anywhere around. I even tried to have Noah just sit still beside me one time to see if Avi would be happy nursing if he could look at Noah, but no, he couldn’t nurse if he was ogling his brother. He adores Noah. He laughs easily and smiles at everyone, but Noah seems to get them even without trying. He just walks up to him and puts his face in Avi’s and Avi cracks up.

Avi has started fussing at dinnertime. It really seems like he’s saying, “Hey what’s going on here and why don’t I get a piece of this?” So we decided he was ready to try some rice cereal. Auntie Jenn pointed out that it might also give an option for feeding him so that Cary and I could go on a date when we are all in Hawaii, because he still refuses a bottle. I think in his 4.5 months of life this chubby baby has had less than an ounce from a bottle. We’ve tried a sippy cup several times too, but no luck, nevermind that it’s filled with breastmilk. We let Noah give him his first few spoonfuls of rice cereal. His face lit up. He looked so excited. That was three days ago. I think now that he was just excited that Noah was putting something into his mouth, because it hasn’t excited him since. Today he threw a fit about it. I wonder how weaning will go with this nipple-chomping, voracious velociraptor.

We’ve made no progress on sleeping through the night. Although we are frequently successful in letting him fall to sleep on his own in the crib, he still wakes up several times a night, rarely sleeping past 1 or 2 before his first feeding and then wanting feedings every one to two hours after that.

He’s getting much stronger. He doesn’t mind tummy time anymore and can hold him self up on his arms. He’s accidentally rolled over from tummy to back twice. He really startled himself both times. He still hasn’t managed to go from back to tummy but I think that’s because whenever he’s on his back he does crunches. He must have the best baby abs ever because he does hundreds of crunches a day, with each one lasting several seconds sometimes. He’s so focused on trying to sit up that he isn’t moving in the right position for rolling over. I have no doubt that he’ll get there eventually.

Halloween was a success. Here are pictures of our completed costumes. Noah's has been worn on a daily basis actually, so it's less of a Halloween costume than a daily dress up piece now. Avi and I were Kang and Roo (the other way around of course). Not exactly a flattering shape for me, but I think we did effectively look like a kangaroo and joey, with our matching ears. Don't miss Avi's cute matching hat/ears and pants/tail.
In other developments...
Avi...
We dusted off the old exer-saucer for Avi. It says for use after 4 months of age (Noah didn't use it until at least then), but we've started using it with Avi at only 2 and 1/2 months. He loves it. He wants to be standing all the time, and often doesn't like the bouncy seat because it reclines to much - he tries to sit up and lean forward in it - so I thought I'd give it a try. Now it's his favorite thing, right behind bath time and watching Noah that is. We've also started putting him in the highchair at the dinner table so that he's at the same level as the rest of us and sitting up straight. He likes this much better than being put in the swing at dinnertime. As a matter of fact, unlike Noah, Avi hasn't gotten much mileage out of his swing. And despite his apparent upper body strength and control, he still hates "tummy time." He'll start fussing within about 60 seconds usually.
He is producing full laughs and giggles now. And the bath brings out pure squeals of delight. He also seems to giggle every time I take his arms out of his sleeves. I think it's because he knows he is getting naked, his favorite state. He must have gotten that from his brother. Speaking of Noah, several times recently I have come in to wake him from a nap and found he's been sleeping in the buff! He of course thinks it's hilarious when I am surprised to uncover him that way.

In sleeping news, Avi has matured socially and therefore regressed in terms of his sleeping patterns. A month ago he was getting really good at going down when he was just a little bit awake still. Now that doesn't work at all. And his recent trick is to wake up about 30 minutes after going down to bed at night and then take a long time and much cajoling to get back to sleep. Thursday night when this happened we went in to him several times, patting, shshing, rocking and attempting to get him to fall back asleep for more than 3 minutes at a time. Finally Cary gave up and brought him upstairs where we were watching TV. Avi was all smiles, laughing, cooing, etc. I looked at that cherub and told Cary we had just been had. Not yet 3 months and already he knows how to totally manipulate his parents. I don’t think that we’ll be waiting until 11 months to make this one cry it out like we did with Noah.

Noah...
Humorous Noah-isms recently:
“I certainly did,”
“Where was you?”
“I have a good idea!” (usually right before suggesting a slight variation on something you’ve just said no to)
“gianastic” (for really big)
“Hey, I have to tell/show you something.”
“When can I _____?” (insert any activity we’ve been discussing, like riding in a submarine, parachuting (to which I said never), surf, etc.
He still uses almost only male pronouns and objects (he and him, rather than she and her), despite our efforts.
He appears to be regaining his ability to self-entertain, lost temporarily in the wake of Avi’s arrival. His behavior also seems to be improving. Though he’s as strong-willed and stubborn as ever.
We’re in another series of swimming lessons, twice a week. His teacher is really good with him. She knows how to handle him pretty way, though there have been a couple of times when I’ve had to step in and tell him if he doesn’t follow directions (like no spitting water or going away from the place at the wall he’s supposed to stay while she’s working with the other student) that we’re going to have to get out of the pool.
In other wacky developments, he insists on having a line of stuffed animals along the edge of his bed before taking a nap or going to bed. He thinks it’s hilarious to put his pj bottoms on inside out and backwards after he gets up and goes to the bathroom in the morning. And he loves to wear his pants backwards (I let him at home but not when we go out.

10/22/07

Yesterday we took the boys to a pumpkin patch. Noah was really thrilled to see all the pumpkins and ride the horse wagon out to the field. It was incredibly muddy, and he couldn't have been happier to really put his boots to good use. Avi slept in the front pack through the whole adventure until we pulled him out for a picture.

Noah is going to be "Professor Harold Hill"/"a band leader" for Halloween. I have just finished his costume. The look on his face was worth the time and energy spent making it. I finished the jacket Saturday night and he got to wear it to an early Halloween party. His face just lit up when he saw it. He was so excited. Then I got the hat done today and when I showed it to him you'd have thought I'd taken him to the moon. Cary brought home a small gold curtain rod from the hardware store today - since we discovered that you can't buy a baton anywhere in Eugene apparently. It works for Noah. Don't tell him it isn't a baton. He is as happy as if he really was leading a whole "boy's band," singing 76 Trombones all around the house and trying out different marching styles. Harold Hill has become Noah's equivalent to my Laura Ingles as a little girl. He talks about him constantly, as if he's a real person. "Where was he born mama?" Good thing I know the answer to that one, "Gary, Indiana." "Do you think he likes ______ (insert anything)" I should start using this to my advantage. I can hear myself tomorrow already, "You know Noah, Harold Hill eats his vegetables so he can be extra strong and healthy to lead his band." :)

In other Noah news, school is up and down. He had a lovely day today. His teacher was impressed at his cutting skills and his attention span at the particular activity. Last Friday on the other hand, he spit yogurt at the same teacher after she had him come sit by her for lunch because he couldn't stay in his seat. Once again, I find support for my theory that middle school students and toddlers/preschoolers actually have more in common than not. He likes that teacher a lot, therefore, he spit yogurt at her. Oy!

Avi has started sleeping longer spells at night, even doing 9 hours on Friday. Then of course, back to 3 hours the next night, but 6 on Sunday night. So the trend is in the right direction. And just on schedule like Dr. Feurth predicted, he is falling in love with his big brother. Can't take his eyes off him. He absolutely looks mesmerized whenever Noah is in view. He's also "talking" more and more.

10/14/07

Friday Noah and I had a date. I took him to Bounce and then out to lunch. It was a lot of fun to be able to give him my complete attention. He was a sweetheart. Cary stayed with Avi who slept most of the time. It was his first opportunity to use a bottle. He didn’t seem particularly interested. Then in typical Noah pattern, after a period of undivided attention and sweet behavior, he was out of control Friday evening. We attempted to go to the Tot Shabbat service, talked about appropriate behavior ahead of time, but we had to come home within 15 minutes because when everyone else was singing, Noah was resisting Cary’s attempt to engage him and he pulled away from Cary, squeezed between the seats and flailed in such a way as to crash against the lights on the memorial plates, breaking several light bulbs. We were mortified of course. We couldn’t get out of there soon enough. Cary had to clean up all the broken light bulbs before Rabbi Yitz could lead the other children up the walkway to the bimah to get the torah. We finally left with Noah bawling that he wanted to stay for the oneg. We’re going to go apologize to Rabbi Yitz and look at the memorial lights and talk about them tomorrow again when we go to school to review what happened. We talked about it after leaving the synagogue and he really seemed to understand and then amazingly asked if my grandma’s name was up there and why not and then at home started to cry about my grandma wanting to see her picture again. He lives life big with big emotions that kid.

Avi slept 8 hours last night! He’s been sleeping about 3 for his longest stretch, sometimes 4 (a few weeks ago he did 5 hours three nights in a row, but that was short lived), but last night, 8!!!! Let’s see if this holds. Please. Please. Luckily even when he wakes, he goes back to sleep very easily after nursing for a few minutes. So it’s not so bad.
He’s really digging the play mat with the hangy things now. That’s a new development in the last few days. That’s what he’s doing at the moment. And he’s trying to turn over in the bathtub, which is of course dangerous.
In other developments, I think he has blocked tear ducts. If it isn't looking better by tomorrow, I'll take him to the doctor. He gets mucusy goopy eyes. Gross. He's still handsome as ever though. I think he's looking more and more like my dad.

10/11/07

Noah today…
… said he wanted a big “flamily.” Said we should have three kids because 2 aren’t enough. Spurred by a conversation about Mathias’ family (they have 3). When reminded that being a big brother was a lot of work, he still wanted to have another sibling. He was clear, next time he wants a sister.
… asked again about taking ballet lessons. I need to look into that for him
… last week I put a gender limit on him for the first time. Although I’ve been willing to paint his nails and I have no problem with him wearing pink, I had to sadly explain that red glittery “Dorothy shoes” are really for girls. “why? Why? Why?” Well, they go with dresses I tried to explain, and girls wear dresses. It’s the first time I’ve really ever said that there’s something that’s specific for girls or boys other than of course biology.
… music favorites of the week: “Look What’s Going On” from the Forest Gump soundtrack and “If I Only Had a Brain” from Wizard of Oz

Avi…
…has started holding a rattle fairly well.
…absolutely LOVES his bath. I’ve stopped bothering with the baby tub and lay him right in the bath where he can flail around enthusiastically. We’ve taken to doing it every night.

Helloooo Where Are You?????

It's three days past, a full moon, and accoring to our friends that have their fingers on the pulse of all things astrological, a good thing that we didn't have the baby a few days ago. So now apparently the stars are aligned, we can have the baby.

This is a picture of a plant in our yard - looks like the peace sign to me.

Sunday

It seems like this is the first weekend in some time that we got a lot of stuff done around the yard, enjoyed the outdoors, and saw some friends. Part of the garden is planted - tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant, pumpkins. The weeding never ends, but we did get some of that done, too. We watched part of the Eugene marathon on Sunday morning, and then went to a birthday party at Lone Pine Farms. The photos are from the party. (Gretchen would like to note that while we spent time outdoors this weekend, the indoors is now a disaster, so there's no winning.)
